There aren't a large amount of choices inside a bee's life: a bee attends several times of school, graduates from college, and chooses work within the hive that he'll labor at for the remainder of his life. Still, the whole idea of seeing living of your common pest through non-human eyes gets repetitive thanks to films like Ratatouille, Flushed Away, Open Season, and Over the Hedge. It ought to be noted, though, that this first foray into animation by Jerry Seinfeld was four years in production because of its collaborative nature, so its theme may actually have well predated all in the aforementioned films. Children ages 5 and older will love the bees' silly antics, though many of the jokes should go right over their heads and parents should be cautioned about some mildly suggestive humor. This bug's-eye view of life in the world gives Allen's neurotic nonconformist an epic adventure of microscopic proportions: a devastating war with a termite colony, an odyssey on the fabled land of plenty (a picnic ground), plus a race to save lots of his fellow workers from certain death. Other voices include Anne Bancroft since the Queen, Christopher Walken, Jennifer Lopez, Danny Glover, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and John Mahoney. The pc animation isn't exactly realistic but feels as solid and contoured as puppet animation with all the smoothness and slickness of traditional cel cartoons, and the character designs and animation provide a marvelous selection of expressions. Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to choose some from the most famous and sacred stories inside the Western world. Kids ages 5 or over needs to be able to handle the referenced violence; the film doesn't shy from what Egyptians did for their slaves. Perhaps Katzenberg might have aimed lower and developed a more productive animated film, then again again, what's a heaven for? --Doug Thomas

Martin Short plays a bumbling fairy godmother to little Mara Wilson, who makes a wish that her actor-father (Robert Pastorelli) finds success.
